England started the third day of the Boxing Day Test with hope of at least forcing Australia to bat again and perhaps being able to burgle a miraculous victory to keep the series alive.
Those hopes were extinguished in just an hour and 20 minutes as England’s batters crumbled again to hand the Australians the series with ease.
Here’s how each England player rated during the third Test of a disastrous series for the tourists so far…
Haseeb Hameed – 1
Looked petrified as he scored seven runs across 41 balls, including a first-innings duck. England dropped the wrong opener for this Test.
Zak Crawley – 1
Apparently was batting well in the nets before this match but on his recall to the team he batted absolutely abysmally.
Dawid Malan – 3
First poor Test of the series but was at least unlucky with his second-innings lbw dismissal when he went on a marginal umpire’s call.
Joe Root – 5
Another unconverted away Ashes half-century but at least he is actually scoring runs. Cannot do it on his own but captaincy again was poor.
Ben Stokes – 3
Is averaging 16.83 with the bat and 62.25 with the ball in this series. Ring-rusty after four months away from cricket before tour.
Jonny Bairstow – 3
Recall at No 6 didn’t work, unless you count scoring 35 in the first innings a success. Try out Dan Lawrence for final two Tests.
Jos Buttler – 0
More errors behind the stumps and a truly horrendous dismissal in the first innings means he doesn’t even merit a mark. Must go after this tour, if not before.
Mark Wood – 6
Bowled with real fire even though he would have liked a better return and economy rate. Not the problem for England.
Ollie Robinson – 5
Another who is not the problem for England but looked leggy in his third successive Test of the tour. With the Ashes gone should be rested in Sydney.
Jack Leach – 3
Better than Brisbane – just. But out of his depth bowling in Australia. Far too defensive and not a consistent wicket-taking threat.
James Anderson – 9
Superb display, taking four wickets and keeping his team in this match. At 39, you wonder why he bothers carrying on when he’s repaid like this by the batters.
